EReading in the Dark with Your nook

One feature shared by all of the eBook readers featured on this website is e-ink technology -- a system designed to make it seem more like you're reading a real printed book than an electronic display. Part of the goal of achieving a "book-like" experience is to do away with backlighting. So if you want to read the nook or any of the Kindles or Sony devices in low light conditions, you're going to need a reading lamp.

Just as with covers, there is no shortage of reading lights available for wireless readers. But unlike covers (which are generally custom-designed for a particular model's size and shape), most reading lights can be used with most eReader devices.

Here are some features you should consider:

The size of the reading light: If your reading is confined to one place, this probably doesn't matter, but if you travel or read in several dimly-lit locales, you'll want a lamp that's lightweight and easy to store. Many models are built small -- others can fold down for storage.

The dynamics of the light itself: Does it provide an even glow over your reading area? A few eBook reading lights are incandescent, but many more use LED bulbs, which will cast a different kind of light and will last much longer. Many users say they suffer less eyestrain with LED reading lights.

Attachment: Most eBook reading lights are designed with alligator-style clips to clamp the light fixture to your reader. Lamps sold under the M-Edge brand are made with a metal base that slides into a slot that's built into many M-Edge covers.

Distance: How far away will the light be from the electronic page? Too far, and it may not be bright enough. Too close, and it may seem too bright.

Price: You can pay anywhere from a couple of dollars up to around $40 for a reading light. You'll have to decide if the higher-priced selections are worth the money.

There are also two other low-light reading alternatives. You could use any table lamp around the house or office, though this might be distracting to your bed-mate who's trying to sleep. Then there's the miniaturized miner-type search lamp you can strap to your head. It may look a little funny, but some users say it works quite well with eBook readers.
